06 Apr It’s Not Too Late to Contribute to your IRA or Roth IRA for 2017

With the April 17th deadline for filing personal income taxes rapidly approaching, last-minute filers have just a few days to finish their 2017 taxes and make contributions to your IRA for the 2017 tax year.  This  year is unique in that the actual tax filing deadline is Tuesday April 17th, since April 15th falls on a Sunday and Monday, April 16th is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia.  Visit to see how much you can contribute to your IRA or Roth IRA for 2017.

If you need to establish an IRA or Roth IRA account to make your 2017 contribution (or to get started on your 2018 contributions), can help.

Open your account to get started

Go to and click on “Open an Account”.  You will be directed from our website to a site hosted by our technology partner provided by Betterment for Advisors.  Fill out your basic identifying information to get started.  Confirm your account by affirming the email that is sent to you.

Link your bank account so you can fund your account

To fund your account, you will need to link a bank account.  This takes about 24-48 hours, so be sure to get started a few days before the tax filing deadline if you need to make a contribution for 2017.  Simply link your checking account and confirm the two small deposits that are made. Once your bank account is linked, you will be able to fund your IRA.

Create Your IRA Account

To open your IRA, click “Add Account” from your account Summary page.  Select which type of IRA you need to open (Roth or Traditional). Answer some of the basic questions, such as: ”Are you saving for retirement?”, “At what age do you want to retire?” and then enter your target retirement age.  Your responses to these questions help us provide a recommended allocation to help you achieve your goal.  Once you have a recommended allocation, you can review and edit your goal if you choose.  Questions?  You can call us at the number provided and we’ll help answer your questions.  Read and agree to the agreements and your account will be established.

Make Your Contribution

After your account is open, you will need to make a deposit to get you on track (you will first need to link a bank account as discussed above to proceed to funding your account).  Type in the amount you want to deposit, click “One-time”.  If you want to fund a 2017 tax year contribution, be sure to select “Prior Tax Year Contribution” for Contribution Type. Enter the Amount.  Click Deposit to initiate the transfer.
